Seen, Heard, Held: An Empathetic Reversal & Impending Individuals
In the days of world-changing events, we are reminded of this world’s mutability—the idea that its only constant is change. These hardships bring about reformation to the societal norms that, while questionably effective in the pre-COVID world, can no longer suffice. As a duty to our current selves, future selves, and future generations, we have begun to reform the status quo around the ideas of care, future, urgency, and vulnerability.
Two humans, two different stages of life, and the power of virtual communication blended together to produce the following conversation:
Legacy Russell (she/they) is a curator and writer. She is the associate curator of exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem and the author of Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto (Verso Books, 2020).
Lauren Simon (she/her) is a college student at Long Island University, New York, and an alumna of Dia Teens.
Legacy Russell and Lauren Simon have maintained a correspondence since meeting in 2019 during a Dia Teens visit to Radical Reading Room at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Seen, Heard, Held invites current and past members of Dia Teens to engage in creative, nonhierarchical, intergenerational exchange with artists and curators around the questions that have most urgently risen to the surface within and beyond their experiences at Dia.
